Women safety now just a call away

The 1090 Women Power Line is a beautiful concept initiated by CM AkhileshYadav. With an aim to empower women, he along with his wife, Dimple Yadav, coined ‘1090 Women Power Line’ instead of calling it as ‘1090 Women Helpline’. It has been developed as a parallel to the existing system of policing, through the medium of new-age technology like mobiles and internet. 

This service for women is the first-of-its-kind in the country as it is for women, by women. It is the proactive approach of the CM that this WPL 1090 was launched around one month before the Nirbhaya issue. As per the sources, the total cases registered so far in Uttar Pradesh are <g data-gr-id="40">3,50,229,</g> while the solved cases are 3,43,590.  

The main idea of the entire programme is not to apprehend offenders and convict them but to deter them and raise awareness. Women need to stand up and speak about the crimes against them. By keeping the victims’ identity disclosed, 1090 is a vent for our daughters, sisters and mothers to let their voices be heard and not just listen. 

While the victim is not required to come to the police station anymore, 1090 keeps them posted with the progress with regard to their complaints. With this state <g data-gr-id="34">police</g> ensures that they are with them till their problem is resolved to their satisfaction. No doubt, if the harassment of girls and women is under control, other problems like domestic violence and dowry can be sorted out as they are just an off-shoot of this malaise.

With the motto ‘We are not here to help you, but empower you’, the trained call takers in 1090 Women Power Line have seen the transition of many fearful voices to fearless voices. <g data-gr-id="42">Likewise</g> the concept of Power Angles is getting quite popular. Power Angels act as the face of 1090 in the society. 

By appointing Power Angels, 1090 Women Power Line aims to generate this informal support system from within their surroundings comprising of women and girls just like them. It <g data-gr-id="39">is therefore</g> essential for the Power Angels to be dedicated towards the cause of women and 1090, and effectively manifest themselves as friends and confidantes of the girls so as to be able to constructively engage, motivate, help, and also connect them to 1090.
