Take on others, not party: Sonia to MPs

The Congress president addressed a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party in New Delhi on Wednesday, which was also attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Sonia Gandhi told her colleagues in Parliament to learn a lesson from the party’s terrible performance during the recent polls.

She stressed that leaders should avoid factional behaviour and work together as a united team for the upcoming elections. ‘People look to us, but we need to show them our commitment and our unity if we are to convert this sentiment into electoral victories,’ Gandhi asserted.

She also said, ‘It seems to be almost fashionable these days to criticise the government. We must not allow this to deflect us. We must speak forcefully and with confidence on what we have achieved, and there is much we have to show despite difficult economic times.’

As reported by Millennium Post on Wednesday, the Congress praised the finance minister Pranab Mukjerjee on the Vodafone tax issue. Gandhi praised the Union budget presented by Mukherjee for providing more funding for key social programmes and added that there was a need to end corruption and ‘improve the effectiveness of public expenditure’.

The All India Congress Committee general secretary and party’s media cell chairperson Janardhan Dwivedi said, ‘Sonia Gandhi addressed her MPs, and she said that it’s time to start schemes in the budget, but it is also more important to implement these schemes. She also spoke about a policy on public procurement and that there would be a law to streamline it.’

Dwivedi added, ‘Mrs Gandhi... was disappointed with the results of Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Punjab elections. But, she said that at least in UP we emerged as a serious player after two decades and increased our vote share.
