Rhythms from Yale

Delhi recently got a taste of music from foreign shores when Whim and Rhythm, a group from Yale University, performed at a south Delhi mall. The band was formed by the students of the university who wanted a group exclusively for seniors. They usually tour domestically and in the greater New England area yearly, visiting locations from New York and Los Angeles to Hong Kong and Cairo, and recently founded a full-fledged Alumnae Board to help build the group’s legacy from beyond Yale’s campus. Their music comprise everything from jazz to folk to pop and traditional songs from the university.

Millennium Post
caught up with Katelyn McDonald and Yael Zinkow from the 14-member band before they enthralled the audience. Excerpts:

When was the group formed?

It was formed by our seniors (at Yale) for the first time in 1981. After that, every year the seniors, that is the third year students start a group and the second year students join them. The same thing is repeated when the second year students get promoted.

Did you face any difficulty looking for people for the band?

No, we never face any problems in forming the group. We really enjoy getting engaged with our juniors and develop a great bond with them. We help them with all the problems and take their views.

Tell us about your music.

Our music varies from jazz standards to folk. We also sing pop and traditional songs from Yale University. We draw on every genre from jazz standards to folk, from every era of pop to traditional Yale songs. We sing every type of songs. We keep adding new arrangements but also add songs from the past that have been sung by our seniors.
