The most awaited and coveted name in Indian politics Rahul Gandhi has finally come out in the open about his political plans. On Thursday, the Congress general secretary announced that he would play a 'greater role' in the party, though the party would decide its contours. This development comes a day after the Congress president Sonia Gandhi announced that Rahul would take a final call on his political future.

After numerous reports indicating his elevation in the party, and possibly in the government as well, he announced on Thursday, 'I will play a more proactive role in the party and the government. The decision has been taken. The timing is up to my two bosses – the Congress president and the prime minister.'

A source in the party told Millennium Post, 'Rahul Gandhi is likely to take the large role in the party, and not the government. He could either become the vice president or the secretary general of the party, as there is a precedence of both these posts.'

'Gandhi is unlikely to take part in the government or the cabinet, as the Congress is heading towards elections and he would not want to be part of a heavily incumbent government. His elevation in the party is likely to happen as part of larger party rejig plan which is expected to take place after the monsoon session of Parliament,' the source added.

An ecstatic All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Janardan Dwivedi expressed happiness in an official statement, 'We will be very happy if Shri Rahul Gandhi takes on some more responsibility, and it will be a very welcome step. What responsibility, whether in the government or the party and when, it is up to the party leadership and Rahulji to decide.'

The Congress had prepared ground earlier this week for Rahul to make this statement. First, it was the law minister Salman Khurshid, who in an interview to a newspaper, said that Rahul had disappointed many by only doing political cameos. It was followed by Rahul's mentor Digvijay Singh's demand for a more important role for the disciple in the party and the government. After Sonia's statement, there was not much left to be revealed in the plot.
