Mamata to give Infosys reason to smile

Infosys mentor N R Narayana Murthy has been the chosen presidential candidate for many in the civil society. But, till now, political bigwigs have decided to play deaf. However, the power play that’s on before the presidential poll will benefit his company Infosys in a big way.

The United Progressive Alliance, in an attempt to appease West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, is finally looking into the request of Infosys to extend certain financial benefits for a special economic zone (SEZ) to his proposed software park in West Bengal and also to extend its deadline.

In fact, recently, Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma went to the North Avenue official residence of Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and waited outside for 20 minutes. After the meeting, which went smoothly, Sharma promised Banerjee that his ministry will do everything to make this Infosys project successful in West Bengal.

Earlier, Infosys had proposed to make a huge investment in West Bengal and they wanted to set up a SEZ for information and technology. But the West Bengal Chief Minister, who had always opposed a SEZ, could veto the Infosys SEZ project. But she was very keen that Infosys invest in West Bengal in some other way.

So a new formula was created where Infosys got ready to convert this SEZ into a software park, for which they requested for certain economic benefits that an SEZ can enjoy. Banerjee took up this issue and convinced the Congress party President Sonia Gandhi and even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to consider this request favourably.

Since the political scenario is dominated by the presidential election, Mamata’s support is crucial. PM Manmohan Singh apparently took a positive call and sent Commerce Minister Anand Sharma to her official residence immediately in order to discuss the Infosys issue.

The outcome of their successful meeting gave Banerjee a reason to smile. Of course, Sharma had his own reasons to smile as well. Interestingly, although N R Narayana Murthy could not become the president, he is smiling, too. Things, eventually is working in his favour.
