Delhi showcases Bengali handicrafts

Hand-woven Baluchari and Swaranachari silk sarees, colourful dashabatar cards, rhythmic yoga and Nazrulgeeti - West Bengal is wooing Delhiites with its exquisite handicrafts and handloom products from the temple town of Bishnupur.

The second edition of the week-long Bishnupur Festival began at Dilli Haat in south Delhi two days ago and is drawing crowds.

The exhibition has displays and sale of the magnificent Baluchari and Swaranachari silk sarees with hand-woven embroidery as well as terracotta products bearing hallmarks of unique Bengal-style brick artistry, monuments, handicrafts, colourful dashabatar cards and conch shell products.

Baluchari saree, which has enjoyed the special patronage of the Murshidabad royal court since the 17th century, has been registered this year under the Geographical Indication of Goods Act. GI patent is used to identify agricultural, natural or manufactured goods originating in some specific area or region and protects the producers along with adding to the brand value.

Cultural programmes are also being organised as part of the festival featuring Bishnupur gharana artistes as well as an ensemble of Bengali culture including Rabindrasangeet, Nazrulgeeti, drama performance, fusion of instrumental music of tabla, Bangla dhol and shreekhol and rhythmic yoga.

Another attraction of the festival is sale of products by artisans from Bishnupur.

The festival was inaugurated by Anup K Chanda, Additional Chief Secretary of Bengal government's Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and Textiles Ministry.

The valedictory function will be attended by Delhi Chief Secretary P K Tripathi.
