Delhi, Kolkata airports top in baggage theft

Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai airports top in number of cases of theft of passenger baggage this year. Civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju gave this information in Lok Sabha while replying to a question on baggage theft at airports. He said, ‘Cases pertaining to theft and pilferage are reported by complaints to local police or brought to the notice of airline concerned. The local police, which is under the jurisdiction of the concerned state government, register and investigate such cases.’

According to the data provided by the ministry, since 2011 Delhi tops the charts for baggage theft cases registered at the airport registered with the local police. Although the figure has dropped from 31 cases being reported in 2011 in the national Capital, to 24 in 2012 and in 2013 further dropping to 14.

While this year (till May) this figure has risen to 18. Meanwhile second in line is Kolkata airport which had the highest number of pilferage cases in 2011 amounting to 32, following a sharp decline to 6 cases in 2012, rising to 14 in 2013. But this year the figure reported till May has been of 8 cases.

Third in this list is Mumbai, which had a total of 28 cases reported of theft in 2011, falling to 22 the next year and 2013 witnessed only 13 cases. This year Mumbai has recorded only 2 cases of theft at the airport. In totality till May this year there have 34 cases of theft reported across 19 airports in the country.
