Cong doubles efforts to curb onion prices

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday directed chief secretary DM Spolia to take immediate short-term measures in order to ensure stabilisation of onion prices in the capital.
Spolia has also been asked to suggest long-term measures to prevent seasonal fluctuation in onion prices in the future.

Later in the day in a meeting chaired by Spolia, it was decided that the city government would arrange sale of onions at reasonable prices through 150 mobile vans from 17 August instead of the 50 announced earlier. The mobile vans would be deployed at various places across the city.

In addition to this, the city government is also finalising certain static points where the vans would be deployed. The sale of onions at reasonable prices at the doorstep of the residents in various colonies would go a long way in providing relief to the families who have been facing difficulties due to soaring prices of onion.
It is expected that arrival of onions from Alwar would start in couple of days which would ease the situation a little.

Meanwhile, BJP activists protested outside Dikshit’s residence over rising onion prices. The protesters were led by Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel, former health minister Harsh Vardhan and ex-mayor Arti Mehra.
