Bill shakes hand with new India

The Microsoft founder Bill Gates is back again in India. On Wednesday, he embraced the new political reality of India when he called upon the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow. The meeting focussed on healthcare and medical issues in the state, the minister of state for protocol Abhishek Mishra told Millennium Post. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation plans to work in the state.

Mishra, who was also present at the meeting, said, 'The meeting between Akhileshji and Bill Gates went off very well. They were both interested in the fate of medical situation and healthcare in Uttar Pradesh via the Melinda and Bill Gates foundation. Mr Gates is working through this organisation to improve the state of health standards across the world. The meeting was only on this account and not related to Microsoft at all. In fact it was not a Microsoft meeting, but more of a Melinda and Bill Gates foundation meeting. That's what brought him here. We were very keen to work together and were so happy to have him here in Lucknow to have come here and met out honourable chief minister Mr Akhilesh Yadav. It is a great idea, because it will benefit Uttar Pradesh.'

In fact, the sources in the Samajwadi Party told us that the representative from the Gates foundation had done the ground work for this meet and arranged the meeting with Yadav. Gates presented a five-point programme that his foundation plans to unveil in the state to improve healthcare in sectors like neo-natal care, nutrition, family planning and child health.
