A blend of Sufi rock and languages

It isn't everyday that the melody of Sufi meets the angst of rock. The vibrancy of folk, the connect of Sufi, and the contemporary beat of rock — if that's what is on your mind now then head to west Delhi on Friday to catch Sufi rock band Nasya in action.

For this Delhi-based band, it is all about creating the right vibes with people. 'We will play tracks of our latest album,' says Kunal Wason from Nasya.

The album is slated for release in August and the band wants to gauge audience reaction by playing the songs from the album at their various performances.

Nasya calls themselves a fusion band. The name originates from a Hebrew word meaning 'the Miracle of God'. Their parents and people around them serve as their inspiration.

Nasya has Kunal Wason on vocals, Ashish Chauhan on drums and vocals, Abhishek Sengupta on guitars, Kartik Dhar on keyboards and vocals,Varun Kapahi on bass, Hiten Panwar on percussions and Nikhil Kumar on flute.

One interesting thing about Nasya is they sing in three different languages — Urdu, Punjabi and Haryanvi. 'Our music also has elements from jazz,' points out Wason.

The band tries to fuse folk culture with contemporary beats of modern Indian rock in their performances. They also draw inspirations from pre-Partition days and their music draws inspiration from the folk music of undivided Punjab.

For Delhiites on Friday they will be belting out their popular numbers like Jugni Ji and Rabba Mainu Maaf Kare among others.

If you have an ear for it, start your weekend with this nice amalgamation.
