Zonal transport offices to remain open this weekend

Zonal transport offices across Delhi will remain open this weekend to help new car owners get high security registration plates [HSRP] with police and transport department deciding to launch a crackdown against violators.

Senior officials in the department said all the zonal car registration offices have been told to remain open for next two days so that vehicle owners can get the HSRP installed in their cars.

The transport department and police have decided to carry out a joint drive from Monday to crack down on new vehicles not having the HSRP.

The Delhi government on 30 April had rolled out the HSRP which have features like laser hologram and prevent counterfeiting and duplication.

As per government order, all new vehicles hitting the city roads since 1 May need to have HSRP installed. Officials said after purchasing a vehicle, the vehicle owner needs to go to designated office of the transport authority to get a HSRP installed and it takes a maximum of three days for getting the plate.

They said each HSRP for two-wheelers costs Rs 69 while for a car the cost is Rs 214 per plate. For three-wheelers, the cost per HSRP is Rs 86. The contract for supplying HSRP has been awarded to Rosemerta Technologies Ltd.

The governments of various states and Union territories were warned by the Supreme Court in February to either ensure HSRP for all vehicles by June 15, this year or face contempt of court proceedings.
