Yuvraj fails before Punjab recovers to 154/4

Captain Yuvraj Singh fell cheaply in his Ranji Trophy season opener before Uday Kaul and Gurkeerat Singh led Punjab’s recovery against Railways on day two of the Group A match here on Friday.

Punjab were reduced to 44 for four with Yuvraj’s dismissal before Uday (59*) and Gurkeerat (66*) steadied the ship with an unbeaten 110-run partnership.

Punjab, replying to Railways’ 331 all out, were 177 runs behind at close of play.

Railways, starting the day from overnight 257 for five, could add only 74 runs to the total.

Punjab medium pacer Siddharth Kaul was the pick of the bowlers, ending with a five-wicket haul.

Later, Uday and Gurkeerat showed maturity to bail their team out of a tough situation. Gurkeerat was the aggressor in the partnership, hitting 10 fours and a six.

Yuvraj did not last long in the middle, scoring nine off 35 balls.

Punjab’s reply came after opener Shivakant Shukla and Ashish Yadav took Railways to a competitive first innings total.
