Youth stabbed for protesting against liquor consumption

A youth from Jitnangar village in Malda was seriously injured after he protested against some local anti-socials who were consuming liquor in the open in the locality in broad daylight. The incident occurred under Mothabari police outpost in Malda on Sunday morning. The incident triggered tension in the area.

Police said that the victim, Samir Mondal, a local resident, on Sunday morning was taking a stroll at Jitnagar village when he saw that some local youth were consuming alcohol inside a mango garden. 

The local people told the police that the miscreants used to booze in that area quite often and the local people had to bear with their activities. They protested against the incident but the youth did not pay any heed to them. As the accused were involved in anti-social activities, nobody had the courage to stand against them. Even the local residents did not dare to protest against them in fear of being harassed by the anti-socials.

The locals also alleged that despite repeated pleas, the police did not take any action against the accused. They had informed the local police station that anti-social activities were being done in that area but not a single raid was conducted by the police. Even the women fear to cross through that area after the sundown. 

Police came to know during investigation that the victim, Samir asked them to stop the consumption of alcohol in the broad daylight. One Paban Mondal was boozing there with some of his friends. The incident had made them so angry that they hit the victim on his head with the bottle containing alcohol.

As the victim raised an alarm, despite, of the injuries inflicted upon him, the accused stabbed him on his back with the broken bottle.

The victim received serious injuries on his back. The local residents rushed to the spot and took him to Malda Medical College and Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.

The accused fled from the spot after the incident. Police are conducting raids to nab the culprits. Police are also investigating whether the victim had any past rivalry with the accused.
