Youth kills own mother over property dispute

In a tragic incident, a 41-year-old woman was killed by her son following a dispute over property. The incident took place at Rampur area near Tapan in South Dinajpur late night on Friday.

Police said the victim Bharati Singh used to stay with her son and a daughter. There had been some difference in opinion between the victim and her 21-year-old son Abhimanyu over selling out a plot.

The woman was not ready to sell it out while her son had repeatedly put pressure on her. The woman was bringing up her daughter all alone as her husband went missing 10 years ago. So she was not ready to sell out the plot which was the only thing left that she could sell off to get her daughter married.

The youth had even asked her mother to give him the documents of the plot after she repeatedly refused to sell it.

Police came to know from local people that there used to be quarrel among the woman and her son pretty often. Friday night too they heard the son screaming at his mother. But they had never imagined that he would kill her.

At around 11.45 pm on Friday they heard the victim’s daughter crying for help and rushed inside the house to find the woman lying unconscious on a bed. Finding that people were approaching their house, the youth had fled.

Local people informed the police. Police reached the spot and sent the body for an autopsy. A police officer said it seemed that the youth had smothered his mother by covering her face with a pillow.

The police came to know that the accused was hiding in the residence of one of his friends in Ramnagar area itself. The police conducted a raid and arrested him. The police collected samples from the house which was essential for the probe.

Local people claimed that the woman used to work for more than 10 hours a day to earn livelihood for the family. But they failed to state any reason that had prompted the youth to put pressure on his mother to sell out the plot.
