Youth killed in road accident, mob sets police vehicle on fire

A mob set a police jeep on fire and attacked Mayureshwar police station in Birbhum on Friday following a road accident in which a youth was killed after he was hit by a dumper.

The incident took place when a dumper in a bid to overtake another vehicle lost control and hit a cyclist from behind killing him on the spot.

Infuriated over the incident, local residents blocked the road alleging that despite complaints the police did not take steps to control the movement of trucks and dumpers. They allege that accidents occur frequently as heavy vehicles move at a high speed.

When police tried to lift the blockade, the protesters started pelting brickbats at them. Later, they attacked the police station and set a police vehicle on fire.

A large contingent of policemen from Suri reached the spot and dispersed the mob.

A police team is carrying out a search operation for those who torched the jeep.
