Youth in Behala held for shooting at another

A youth in Behala had a narrow escape when another youth from the same area shot at him following a business rivalry.

Some local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of gunfire and soon informed the police. Police recovered the gun and a cartridge from the spot and later arrested the accused.

The incident occurred at Charak Tala area of Behala late Tuesday night and triggered tension among the locals. Police said that Roni Chowdhury shot at Rakesh Haldar – both of whom are members of a local club – following a business rivalry. Haldar was lucky to escape unhurt, while Chowdhury managed flee the spot.

After getting information about the firing, police reached the spot and arrested the accused.

The accused refused to admit his crime, but after a prolonged interrogation he broke down and told them why he attacked tried to kill Haldar.

From preliminary investigation, police came to know that there was a long standing rivalry between two groups supplying construction materials in the area. Locals told police that a quarrel broke out between the two youth over the same issue. It soon turned violent when Chowdhury took out a gun and shot at Haldar.

According to the police, the two youth belong to separate construction syndicates being operated by rival groups in the region.

Investigating officers are also interrogating the victim in connection with the incident. Some local people and members of the club, to which the youth belong, are also being questioned.

It may be mentioned that in recent times incidents of firing have been reported from various parts of Kolkata, including Entally, Kasba, Tangra and Tiljala.
