Youth held for killing woman in Salt Lake

Police on Wednesday arrested a youth in connection with the murder of 50-year-old woman whose body was found in Salt Lake on Monday morning. 

It may be recalled that the victim Shibani Mondal used to stay all alone in a house near a bheri and she used to cultivate fish at some bheris in the area.

Police said that the accused Bhupal Mondal was a worker of the bheri and he resides in the same area. Police on Wednesday arrested him from his house after preliminary investigation revealed that he was involved in the crime.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested youth and around five others had gathered near the bheri to steal fish. The woman came out of her house and tried to restrict them from stealing fish. In response, the youth beat her up and they stabbed her. The incident took place in a deserted place and there was no one to take the woman to hospital. As a result, she died on the spot. 

Police had picked up some youth from the area and interrogated them. During interrogation police came to know that they had been running a racket and members of which steal fish from the bheris. They had stolen fish from many other bheris in the area. A police officer said that the accused have been remanded in police custody and he can provide details about his associates. Police have initiated a search for other accused.

According to information, police would take the accused to the spot to reconstruct the plot. The police have intensified vigil in the area. Local people have also decided to form a group to patrol the area at night to stop the gangs from stealing fish from bheris as it is incurring a huge loss for businessmen.
