Youth gets head slashed for standing up to local goons, two others injured

A youth from Khardah in North 24 Parganas was slashed in his head with a sharp weapon after he had protested against some local miscreants who were running a gambling racket and consuming liquor in the area.

The victim Tarak Singh is presently undergoing treatment for severe head injuries at the BN Bose Hospital in Barrackpore. Two other associates of the victim, who went to his rescue, were also attacked by the miscreants and were injured. Local residents in Patulia area of Khardah alleged that a gang of five to six miscreants used to consume liquor in the locality after sun down and also run a gambling racket in the area.

They also used to harass women walking on the street which has become the den of the accused. The miscreants were also involved in various illegal activities, but none of the locality residents ever come up to protest against such incidents. Incidents of harassment of women in the area had recently gone up. They used to hurl abuses on the women passing through the area. As the situation was going out of control, the victim on Sunday night protested against four of the local youth who were boozing in the area and abusing women.

The four miscreants called the victim from his house on Sunday night and took him to a nearby area where they slashed his head. When two friends of the victim rushed to the spot to rescue him, the miscreants also attacked them. One of them received a severe injury on his hand.

After hearing the screams of the victims, the local people rushed the spot and took the injured to the BN Bose Hospital in Barrackpore. The four miscreants fled from the spot immediately after the incident. Bijoy Nag, a local resident said that life has become a misery for the local people as the area becomes a den of some local anti-social elements, who still continue to booze there and taunt the women passing through the area.

They said that the miscreants would have killed Tarak if his two friends had not arrived on time.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by the family members of Tarak, police have started an investigation.
