Youth commits suicide after killing father-in-law

In a bizarre incident, a youth committed suicide in his house at Tiljala after killing his father-in-law at Madhyamgram in North 24-Parganas early Thursday morning. Police suspect that it is an outcome of a dispute between the youth, Sumit Burman and his wife Bhagyashree.

A police officer said that Sumit went to his in-law’s house at Madhyamgram at around 2.30 am on Thursday. His wife was also staying at Madhyamgram along with  her father.

Sumit had an affair with Bhagyashree for the past five years and they had got married one year ago. But there had been certain problems between Sumit and his wife. Finally, Bhagyashree moved to her father’s house three months ago. There used to be problems whenever Sumit used to visit his in-law’s house, police came to know from local people.

An altercation broke out between the youth and his father-in-law Anupam Das when the former went to Madhyamgram in the wee hours on Thursday. It led to a scuffle and Sumit started stabbing Anupam with a knife. Bhagyashree also received injuries on her head when she tried to save her father.

The youth fled from the house realising his father-in-law had died. Neighbours took both to hospital where Anupam was declared brought dead and Bhagyashree received necessary treatment.

Policemen from Madhyagram police station came to know that Sumit was a resident of Tiljala and contacted the duty officer of Tiljala Police station. Policmen from Tiljala police station went to his house and found him handing from the ceiling when they broke open the door of his room.

Police recovered a suicide note from the room in which Sumit stated that he and his wife had decided to commit suicide together after killing his father-in-law, who had been trying to create a barrier between them. But Bhagyashree shouted to attract attention of the neighbours when he was trying to kill his father and it was a trap to get him arrested.

Sumit’s family members also claimed that the Bhagyashree had created such a situation that forced 

the youth to commit suicide and they demanded arrest of the woman. They have also provided recordings of telephonic conversations between Sumit and his wife to the police.
