Youth beaten to death for refusing to cough up money for puja donation

A 26-year-old youth was beaten to death at Kachrapara in North 24-Parganas for refusing to give donation for a puja.

Police said that the victim, Garju Basfor was a local resident.

An altercation broke out between the victim and the accused Amit Prasad over the demand for donation.

The accused was allegedly involved anti-social activities in the area and also used to run an illegal 
hooch den.

A few days ago, the accused had asked him to give Rs 1,000 as donation for puja.

The accused continued putting pressure on him despite his submission that he cannot give such a huge amount.

On Wednesday evening, an altercation broke out between them and it led to a scuffle. Prasad started beating him up with a wooden log.

He received severe injuries on his head. The accused fled after dumping Garju in a vat. He was declared brought dead after being taken to a hospital at Kalyani.

The local people put up a road block protesting against the incident and demanded action against the accused.

In another incident a tension gripped Balarampur area of Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas when some 
drunk miscreants assaulted some women and children who went to the area to see a function.

Many villagers congregated in the area to witness the programme on Tuesday evening when some drunk men started teasing the women who were attending the programme.

Some of the organisers who protested against the incident were attacked by the miscreants. When many local people intervened, the accused fled the spot. They later returned to the place late on Tuesday night. They hurled bombs in the Balarampur village causing serious tension among the local residents.

Local people alleged that the miscreants also fired to terrorise the residents. Police have started a probe in this regard. Police are yet to arrest anybody in this connection so far. A detailed probe has been initiated.
