Youth arrested for raping bar dancer

The Bidhannagar City Police have arrested a youth on the charge of sexually assaulting a bar dancer at Salt Lake on Thursday. The youth had allegedly sexually assaulted the dancer in a room of a hotel.

Police said, Avijit Sarkar, the accused, had brought the girl at a hotel in Baishakhi in Salt Lake on August 10. He then allegedly raped her by threatening her with a gun.

After the incident, he dropped the dancer at Ultadanga and had gone at large. A complaint was 

filed at the Bidhannagar North Police Station. Based on the complaint, the police arrested him.

This rape case is the grim reminder of an incident where another bar girl was abducted from Salt Lake Sector V and severally raped before being left at the roadside. Police, however, managed to arrest several people in connection of the rape of the 24-year-old woman in a moving car in the city’s posh satellite township.

The girl was originally from Nepal and was a performer at a dance bar on VIP road. The girl had gone to a multiplex at Sector-V to meet a friend and was waiting on the road for transport when the alleged rapists stopped the car in front of her. They forced her to enter the car before taking her to remote place.

However, a special security alarm constructed in the middle of a pavement can be of ultimate help to a woman in a deserted street if she is stalked by some miscreants. 

Once the alarm is pressed, the nearby police station will get the message of someone in trouble.

The Bidhannagar City police along with Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation have initiated the project to install such alarm in the pavement to ensure added security for women in the city.
