Yogendra Yadav visits UGC protesters, backs cause

Yogendra Yadav on Thursday landed at the protest site in ITO outside the UGC office to lend his support to the protesting students against the complete non-rejection of order of withdrawing non-NET grants to MPhil and PHD students.

“Being a UGC member, I know that there was a decision within the UGC to enhance the scholarships to look after the interests of the financially weak students. Why must you not continue the same process of providing scholarships fulfiling the dreams of lakhs of students?” Yadav said in front of the cheering students. Yadav blamed the increased bureaucratisation and government interference in the UGC saying that, “it only required a phone call from the Joint Secretary in the ministry to cause a change within the UGC.”

He, therefore, added that politics was required in education as it was moving away from the “stated objectives”. Lauding the student group on their protest, Yadav asked the protesting student group to not restrict the protest to only an issue of restoring non-NET grants but to extend it to improving the higher education process in the country.
