Wrong blood transfusion kills student in Jalpaiguri

A class XII student died in a Jalpaiguri nursing home on Wednesday morning after he was transfused with blood that was allegedly incompatible with his blood group. Outraged over this, the kin and neighbours of the deceased student vandalised the private nursing home at Babupara in Jalpaiguri town. They also jostled with the police when the latter went to contain the violence.

Nineteen-year-old Fazlul Islam’s blood group was O+, but the nursing home where he was undergoing treatment for jaundice, allegedly asked his family to arrange AB+ blood on Tuesday evening.

The family did so and Fazlul was transfused with the blood. Ever since, his condition deteriorated fast and Fazlul eventually died this morning. Soon after his death, the deceased student’s kin and neighbours from Racecourse Para in the town raided the nursing home and vandalised its reception area extensively.

A team from Kotwali police station rushed to the site and tried to control the irate group. It was during this that the group redirected their anger towards the cops and got into a skirmish with the policemen.

Reinforcement from the district police line later contained the situation and arrested five persons for the vandalism.
