World’s first Mangrove zoo to come up in Sunderbans

“We are allotting Rs 25 crore for setting up world’s first mangrove zoo. Land has already been identified,” announced the Chief Minister. “We are allotting Rs 90 crore for building roads and bridges in Jharkhali area,” she added.

“We are launching a Rs 400-crore project at Jharkhali on a PPP model where we will construct hotels, an eco-tourism park for the development of Sundarbans,” Banerjee said.

The major highlight of the trip though was the inauguration of the 725 m long Mridanga Setu, which will connect Sunderbans with the mainland. This bridge will connect Mathurapur and Patharpratima.

Banerjee also inaugurated the 132 kv Shirakole power substation which will serve vast areas of Dakshin 24 Parganas. The annexe building of Dr BR Ambedkar College was also inaugurated.

The Chief Minister then went to Jharkhali where she laid the foundation stone for an eco resort, which will be built in PPP mode with the help of Techno India group. She also inaugurated a Tiger Rescue Centre (Byaghro Sundari) at Jharkhali.

“I am working for the all-round development of Dakshin 24 Parganas. We have started a university for women at Diamond Harbour. We are setting up a medical college. We are setting up multi super speciality hospitals as well as fair price medicine shops”, she announced.

Banerjee spoke about facilities for the girl child, to an appreciative audience. “We have started Kanyashree, Sikhhashree schemes to encourage children to pursue education. We will give Rs 25000 to unmarried girls at the age of 18 to pursue higher education. Girls are our assets. They can make that money grow if they pursure higher education,” she said.  

Mamata Banerjee said she wanted  to conserve the endangered flora and fauna of the Sunderbans region.

“We are also developing eco-tourism parks and resorts. The industrialists who are accompanying me here today will invest in boosting tourism in Sunderbans”, she announced.

A 20-member delegation of leading industrialists including Harsh Neotia, Sanjay Budhia, Sanjay Agarwal and Utsav Parekh are also accompanying her on the trip.
