Work comes to halt on DMRC’s Heritage Line

Work on the Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor of the Delhi Metro network has been on hold for the past three months now. The work was stopped on the Heritage Line reportedly because of the objections raised by Northern Railway.

The tunnel work between Central Secretariat and Mandi House is complete, but the construction between Mandi House and ITO is awaiting permission. The tunnel area between Mandi House and ITO comes under Tilak Bridge railway tracks.
‘If we get permission from Northern Railway the remaining work can be finished within 20-25 days,’ a DMRC official said.

The Railway Board had, however, allowed tunneling the stretch under question. Despite the letter written by member engineering, Railway Board to the engineer-in-chief on 17 June, 2013 Northern Railway’s general manager has not permitted work to start.

DMRC submitted Rs 44 lakh as permision fee after which Railways permitted for boring till 13 metre below the ground instead of 15 metre as sought.

According to a source in Northern Railway, ‘There is no dialogue on this issue with any high official of DMRC though the DMRC asked for an inquiry. The permission has been denied owing to security concerns. We can’t compromise on the security question.’

If DMRC fails to manage Northern Railway’s permission quickly the corridor can miss its deadline. The stretch between Central Secretariat to Mandi House in scheduled to be completed by December 2013. While the entire corridor is to be completed by November 2015.

The seven stations on the corridor will include Central Secretariat, Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate.
This corridor will connect some major monuments such as Jama Masjid, Delhi Gate and Red Fort with Janpath.
