Woman’s charred body found at in-laws’ house

Mystery shrouds the death of a housewife whose charred body was recovered from her in-laws’ house at Canning in South 24 Parganas on Monday. Police arrested the husband of the deceased’s and both her in-laws for their alleged involvement in the murder of the victim.

Police said that the body of the woman, Kakoli Pramanik was recovered from inside the house of her in-laws in a charred stated. Police were investigating whether the woman committed suicide or if any foul play was behind the death of the woman.

During the course of the investigation, police came to know that the woman was physically and mentally tortured at her in-laws’ house after her family members failed to pay the dowry as promised by them during the marriage.

The woman reportedly had suffered relentless torture from her husband and in-laws. She told her family members about her ordeal, but they assumed that if they lodged a police complaint their daughter could be subjected to more atrocities.

Local residents on Monday morning found Kakoli’s body lying in a half-burnt state and informed the 
matter to the police. Police reached the spot and sent the victim to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.

The victim’s family members lodged a complaint with the police alleging the victim’s husband and in-laws set her on fire to take revenge as they failed to pay the necessary dowry. Police after starting an investigation and arrested the victim’s husband Subhendu Pramanik and his parents Srinath and Prabhati Pramanik in this regard.

They were remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a court on Monday. Mongol Mondal, the victim’s father alleged that his daughter was murdered by her husband and in-laws as they failed to pay the amount of dowry that the accused had demanded. He said that his daughter had been subjected to both mental and physical torture at her in-laws’ house. 

He had also told the police that some of the neighbours residing close to the victim’s in-laws’ house had called him up Monday morning and said that the accused set his daughter on fire. Police initiated a detailed inquiry as per the father’s statement. The victim’s body was sent for post-mortem examination.
