Woman tries to abandon infant girl on roadside, caught by locals

A deaf and mute woman was caught by local people and later handed over to the police when 
she tried to abandon her four-month-old baby girl on the road.

The incident took place at Bakshara area of Howrah late Sunday night.

Local people said that the woman and an accompanying man were roaming aimlessly in the area on Sunday night, which raised the suspicion of some passersby.

They also saw that the woman was carrying a baby in her arms.

A few minutes later, the woman placed the baby on the road and the duo tried to flee the spot.

Seeing the incident, some local residents chased and caught her.

The man, who accompanied her, however managed to escape.

When they asked the woman as to why she dumped the infant on the roadside, she began making some gestures to the people and was unable to utter any words.

The locals understood that she woman is a deaf and mute. They rescued the baby girl, who was given to the safe custody of the police.

After being informed, the police reached to the spot and arrested the woman.

During the course of the interrogation, police came to know that the woman is the baby’s mother and the man accompanying her is her husband.

The woman told the police that she was no longer interested in continuing their marital relationship and hence decided to separate.She had also decided to abandon her child.

The mother and the baby were taken to a hospital for medical check-up. They were later relocated to a home in Howrah.

Police are, meanwhile, investigating if the incident has any connection with the infant trafficking racket that has been busted in the state.

It may be mentioned that after the trafficking racket came to light, a number of infants have been rescued from various places across the state.
