Woman stops cops from arresting illegal firecracker vendor, held

Bidhannagar Police have arrested a woman who allegedly intervened and stopped the police from arresting people who were selling illegal fire crackers.

Police said the woman, Indrani Dasgupta, a local resident, was trying to save the sellers of illegal firecrackers from the police, while they were being arrested. The police finally arrested all the sellers, along with their saviour Dasgupta. The lady and the other offenders will be produced before court soon, the police said. Personnel of the Baguiati police station conducted a raid in the Zangra area, where some local youth were indulging in selling illegal firecrackers in absence of police patrol vans.

“Local shop keepers were selling illegal fire crackers and some local youth were buying them. Our patrolling van caught those people red handed. But when we were taking them into custody, the woman, who is popular in the locality, appeared there. She intervened in our work and stopped the on duty police personnel there,” said a police officer. The police also seized and destroyed illegal firecrackers of around 50 kg from the spot.

It may be recalled that Bidhannagar police had taken various initiatives during last year’s Diwali to curb noise pollution levels during Kali Puja and Diwali. “We will lay no stone unturned to arrest the offenders who will break the noise pollution norms. We are strictly following the norms given by state pollution control board,” said the officer.
