Woman shot while trying to save daughter from being molested

A woman was shot at when she tried to save her daughter from being molested and kidnapped by some unidentified miscreants who entered their house in the wee hours on Thursday. The incident took place near Piyali at Jibantala in South 24-Parganas.

Police said that the victim girl was sleeping in a room of their thatched-roof house while her parents were in the adjacent room.

At around 2 pm the victim’s parents heard her shouting. They went to the adjacent room and found their daughter fighting with two youth. It was not possible for them to identify the culprits as it was dark inside the room.

One of the youth restricted the victim’s mother from entering the room while another continued to jostle with the girl.

Finding it impossible to restrict the victim’s mother, the youth, who was jostling with the girl, shot her. The woman dropped at the spot. The duo beat up the victim’s father and stabbed him with a sickle.

They fled leaving both of them in a pool of blood. Thereafter, the girl, who was in a traumatised state, went to a neighbour’s house and sought help to save her parents.

The local people took both of them to hospital. The victim’s mother received bullet injuries on her stomach and both of them are in a critical state.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that four youth were involved in the incident. Two of them entered the house while the other two were waiting outside, to keep a watch.

Police also came to know that the youth were present in the vicinity of the house from around 11.15 pm. They were hiding in a toilet till her parents went to sleep. Finding no one around, they came out of the toilet and entered the victim’s room through a window.

Police have arrested one youth in this connection and have conducted raids to get hold of the three others. The firearm and the sickle were recovered from the spot.

Police have questioned friends of the victim to know whether she had rivalry or affair with any youth. A senior police officer said that the motive behind the crime is yet to be ascertained, but ‘attack out of jealously’ could be the reason.

The police are sure that all the youth are locals as they knew all the routes to escape from the area.
