Woman sets husband ablaze

A woman allegedly set her husband on fire after her relationship with another man was exposed on Sunday at South 24 Parganas canning.

The injured man, Rabiul Naskar (26) was taken to a hospital in critical condition. However, police started a case on the basis of complaint lodged by Rabiul’s mother.

The victim had a love marriage with the accused in 2015. Since the woman was older than Rabiul, his mother had expressed her reluctance with the marriage but he married the accused without the permission of his mother.

The neighbour alleged that the newly married woman made Rabiul live separately away from his original residence while his elderly mother was living alone.

“On Sunday, the woman poured kerosene on Rabiul and set him on fire. He started to run towards the pond and jumped on the water managing to save his life. The woman escaped from the spot,” said a neighbour.

Police learnt that the woman was also engaged with another person. She was caught in a compromising situation with that person. Rabiul threatened to take her in the police station. “The angry woman took the kerosene jar and poured on him. Then she lit a match stick to set him on fire,” a police officer said.

In another incident at canning, Rehana Biwi, a 40-year-old woman, was choked to death after a confrontation with her husband on Sunday night. The accused husband has fled. The 7-year-old son of Rehana, who was the only eye witness of the incident, described the whole incident to the police. The investigators are in search of the killer.

Local police believe, domestic violence might be the reason for this murder. Rehana, a mother of three children, was involved in altercation with his husband Rafikul Islam. Suddenly Rafikul pounced on her, chocked her with a pillow. Little Shahin was watching the incident from close proximity. He was screaming but that did not budge his father’s activity.
