Woman killed, daughter injured after building collapses

A 45-year-old woman died while her 23-year-old daughter sustained injuries when a four-storeyed building collapsed at the Azad Market area of North Delhi on Friday evening. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Jingla while her daughter has been identified as Komal.

According to the fire department officials, the incident took place at around 4.05 pm at the Millwali Gali in the Azad Market area when a four-storeyed building collapsed. A team from the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police and National Disaster Rescue Force was present at the spot.

“Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Despite the thick layer of rubble and debris post the building collapse in the congested lane, we were able to rescue the girl on time and rushed her to the nearby hospital,” said a senior Delhi Fire Services officer, who was part of the rescue operations.

A senior police officer said that they rushed Jingla and Komal to the Bara Hindu Rao hospital where Jingla was declared brought dead while Komal is undergoing treatment. The official said: “No more people are trapped under the debris but the search operation is still on. NDRF too has been called in.”

Police said that the building collapsed when Jingla and her daughter Komal (20) were in their flat on the third floor of the building. Locals who witnessed the mishap told the police that the building is more than 60-years-old and alleged that it has never been renovated or painted. Moreover, the locals claimed that most of the residents of the building were saved because majority had gone to their hometowns for celebrating Chhath at the time of the building collapse. A local said that Jingla and Komal were alone in their flat. Her son Paras was at his office. Locals said that they heard a loud noise around 4pm. When majority came out in their balconies to check what had happened, they were shocked.
