Woman killed by grandson over property dispute

Police have arrested the victim’s grandson, Debang Jana and her daughter-in-law Sikha Jana for their alleged involvement in the murder and were remanded in 14 days police custody after being produced before a court in Barrackpore on Saturday.

During an investigation police came to know that Debang had been constantly pressurising his grandmother to hand over a piece of 5 cottah land adjacent to her house in Baranagar. Police said that the victim’s grandson in coalition with his mother conspired to kill the elderly woman as she refused to hand over the land.

The quarrel had broken out few months ago when they came to know that the woman was trying to transfer the land to her daughter who was staying with her husband. The accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she hands over the land to her daughter.

On Friday night, the situation turned violent when the quarrel reached such a point that her daughter-in law and grandson attacked her with a bamboo stick. The woman received severe injuries on her head and eyes.

The local people rushed to her house after hearing her screams and took her to Sagar Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati where she succumbed to her injuries. The post-mortem report has confirmed that the woman was attacked on her forehead which might have led to her death.

As per initial investigation, police suspect that the quarrel over the possession of land had prompted the two accused to kill the woman. Police have started a detailed inquiry into the incident and are interrogating the local people.
