Woman held for attempting to sell newborn baby

A woman was arrested from Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas while attempting to sell a newborn baby.

For the sake of the investigation, police have not divulged the identity of the accused. Some local people caught the accused red-handed while selling a newborn baby.

As it aroused the suspicion of the local residents, they chased the accused. In the face of interrogation, the accused admitted her guilt. Her statement was incoherent as she contradicted her own statements to the villagers. After being informed, the police reached the spot and arrested the accused women.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the woman might have been involved in some child trafficking racket. Her job was to lift babies from hospitals. The accused has, however, admitted that she was selling the newborn baby to a couple who agreed to pay her a handsome amount of money. But her attempt was foiled as the local residents chased and caught her.

It may be mentioned that ever since the child trafficking racket has come in the fore front with the involvement of various nursing homes in the state in such dastardly act, a number of women have so far been arrested for their alleged involvement in selling newborn babies.

Few months ago, police had arrested a female attendant of Midnapore Medical College and Hospital while she was trying to sell a newborn baby. A similar incident had taken place in Burdwan where a woman was arrested for selling a baby whom she had lifted from a hospital.

Police have started a detailed probe into the incident and interrogating the accused in this connection. Police suspect that some more women have been involved in the incident. The woman was remanded in police custody after being produced before a court.
