Woman heckled for protesting against assault on youth

Some local youth allegedly harassed a woman and threatened her with dire consequences for protesting against the assault of a local youth. The incident took place at Dum Dum late Sunday night.

Police said the woman was visiting Puja mandaps in her locality, along with her family members, on Sunday.

While returning home, she found that some local youth were beating up another youth, Biswajit Sengupta, on RN Guha Road. They continued beating him till he fell on the road.

The woman intervened to rescue him and told the attackers to back off. After she managed to rescue him and returned home, the accused youth followed her all the way to her home and heckled her.

They threatened her with dire consequences if she further intervened in the matter.

By the time many people had gathered outside the woman’s house,  the accused youth managed to flee the area in fear of getting beaten up by the crowd. For a while, the incident led to tension in the areaPolice initially lodged a general dairy in this connection. 

On Monday, the woman lodged an FIR against the miscreants. Police initiated a search for the accused and also questioned Biswajit to know why he was beaten up by them.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the youth had an old rivalry with Biswajit, and beat him up to settle scores with him.

Policemen have been posted in the area to avoid any more trouble and to ensure that immersion of Kali idols goes peacefully.
