Woman found staying with daughter’s corpse

A 50-year-old woman had been staying with the corpse of her daughter at their Jadavpur flat for the past few days.

It may be recalled that a year ago the police had found that a 45-year-old man Partha De staying with the dead body of his sister and two dogs in their house on Robinson Street.

On Tuesday, the woman Sujata Chakraborty approached her neighbours saying that her 21-year-old daughter Sangbrita Chakraborty stopped speaking. The neighbours went to their flat situated in the top floor of the four-storey building where there was a foul smell.

They later saw the decomposed body of Sangbrita on the floor of a bedroom in the flat in Camaelia Abasan at Regent Colony.

However, they informed the matter to police. Policemen from Jadavpur police station reached the spot and recovered the body for post-mortem.

A police officer later said that it seemed the girl had died at least two to three days ago. But her mother was claiming that she had helped her to drink water even on Monday afternoon. The police came to know that the woman’s husband had left them six to seven months ago.

The woman also told the police that her daughter was bed ridden and could not move as she was suffering from pain in her backbone. Thus, the woman had to assist her to take food. The girl had completed her graduation. But recently neither the woman nor her daughter used to interact much with the neighbours.

Police said that preliminary investigation revealed that the family was passing through severe financial crisis and even the power supply of the flat was disconnected for failing to clear the dues.

It seems that the woman had failed to take her daughter for treatment due to lack of money.

The police have contacted the relatives of the family to get further information about the woman and her daughter.
