Mystery shrouds the death of an unidentified woman, whose body with several injuries marks was found in a mangrove at Suti in Murshidabad on Sunday morning.
Police said some local people saw the body in the mangrove adjacent to the SSKM School at Purulia village in Suti. There were no clothes on the body.
Policemen from Suti police station went to the spot after being informed by the local people and sent the body for an autopsy.
Though the police are yet to confirm, but they suspect that the woman was murdered after being gang-raped.
A police officer said that as per the preliminary investigation it seems that the girl is not from a financially healthy family and the miscreants had managed to take her far from her house after assuring her of a job.
Instead of helping her to get her a job, they gang-raped her and killed her when she threatened to go to the police to lodge complaint against them.
After examining the spot where the body was found the investigating officers have confirmed that she was neither raped nor killed in the mangrove. She was killed somewhere else and later dumped in the mangrove.
Police have contacted all the adjacent police stations and senior police officers of the district are also trying to get the identity of the woman. At the same time the police are trying to ascertain the place where the woman was killed.
In another mysterious incident at Liluah in Howrah, the body of an aged priest was found in a well situated adjacent to his house.
The priest was missing for the past two days. On Sunday morning his neighbours got a foul smell from inside the well and informed the police.
Officers of the disaster management group went to the spot and brought the body out and sent the body for an autopsy.
Relatives of the priest suspect foul play behind his death. Police initiated a probe in this connection.
