Woman found dead in train was murdered: Cops

The police on Sunday confirmed that the woman, whose body was found in a compartment of Namkhana Local, was strangulated to death. Her body was found when the train reached Sealdah station on Saturday morning.

The police are yet to ascertain the identity of the victim. But after receiving the post-mortem report, police confirmed that she was strangulated to death a few hours before her body was found.

It seems that the woman was a vegetable trader and she had to take an early morning train to reach Sealdah. But she was killed somewhere and dumped inside the train’s compartment in a basket.

Police found something written on the basket in which the body was found. The investigating officers were trying to find the owner of the basket. A police officer said hundreds of vegetable traders travel in early morning trains and almost all carry such baskets.

They leave a mark on respective baskets for easy identification.

“It seems that the task will be easier once we can identify the person whom the basket belongs,” said a police officer.

The investigating officers have also contacted senior police officers of South 24-Parganas to know whether missing complaint for the woman has been lodged at any police station.

Senior police officers from the district directed officers-in-charge of all the police stations to inform if anybody comes to lodge missing complaint after failing to find out the woman.

The investigating officers have questioned some people in this connection. But they failed to provide any clue that would help the police to arrest the accused.
