Woman dies while trying to get down from running train

An elderly woman died on Thursday after she jumped out from a running train after realising that she had boarded a wrong train. The incident took place at Malda Town station.

Police said the victim Subhra Chakraborty is a resident of Haidarpur in Malda and the incident took place when she was going to her daughter’s house at Hooghly along with her husband.

Her husband Dipen Chakraborty later told to the police they were supposed to board Howrah Intercity Express from Malda Town station. The duo by mistake boarded Bhagalpur Express.

However, it was too late when the couple came to know that they had boarded a wrong train. An eyewitness told to the police that they were shocked knowing that they did such a mistake as they had to reach to their daughter’s house on Friday.

Thus both Dipen and his wife decided to get down from the train. Despite being advised by several co-passengers not to risk their lives, the couple attempted to get down from the running train. “Dipen had somehow managed to get down on the platform, but it was quite a difficult task for his wife. Finding her husband got down from the train, Subhra too jumped off. But she couldn’t control her balance and fell down on platform,” said a police officer.

Subhra received serious injuries on her head. Police and local people took her to Malda Medical College where she was declared brought dead.

A senior official of the railways said they made repeated announcements using the public addressing system and posters all around the station have been put up cautioning people not to take risk by getting down from running train.
