When the train was entering Esplanade station, the victim jumped onto the track and was run over. The driver applied emergency brakes and managed to stop the train, but three compartments had already passed over the body.

Personnel of the Railway Protection Force and other senior Metro officials rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it for the post-mortem.The Metro services between Maidan and Central remained suspended for nearly one-and-half hours, though a truncated service was available between Maidan and Kavi Subhash in the Up line and Central and Dum Dum in the Down.

Around 2 pm, Verma, who was standing at the Esplanade station jumped before the moving train before anybody could understand what happened. The passengers who were waiting at the platform
to board the train told the police that the woman was standing on the platform for a while but nobody could have guessed that she would attempt suicide.
