Woman attacked with acid in Howrah

Tension ran high at Howrah’s Panchla area on Wednesday after acid was hurled at a woman by some miscreants. Local residents, however, alleged that some BJP backed miscreants had attacked the woman with acid when she was in her house along with her husband at Ghoshal Chawk area of Panchla on Tuesday night.

The local people have alleged that a gang of miscreants raided the house of the victim. They tried to set their temporarily built house on fire. When the woman tried to protest against the incident, the miscreants hurled acid on her. The victim’s husband was also beaten up by the miscreants.

The accused fled immediately after the incident. The local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the screams of the victim and took her to a hospital in Uluberia where she has been undergoing treatment.

Police have recovered some crude bombs outside the house of the victim which were kept by the miscreants as suspected by the police.

Incidentally, it may be mentioned that another woman was allegedly heckled by some goons in the area a few days ago. Police are conducting raids to nab the culprits who were involved in the incidents.

A few days ago, a Class XII girl student suffered acid injury when a youth attacked her after she had rejected his marriage proposal at Naoda’s Patikabari area.

The accused Rafikul Seikh had hurled acid on the girl after she refused to marry him. The accused who is a resident of Jitpur village under Domkal police station got acquainted with the victim through a social networking site a few months ago, following which they were involved in a relationship.

In a similar incident at Joynagar in South 24 Parganas acid was hurled at a woman by her neighbour following a quarrel. The victim’s daughter told the police that the accused Pravash Mistri who is a local resident often used to engage in quarrels with the victim’s family on petty matters.
