Woman assaulted by acquaintances, manages to escape

A 21-year-old woman managed to save herself after being attacked by three drunken youth following a family dispute. The incident occurred late Sunday night when the victim was returning home after attending a birthday party at her elder brother’s house.

Police said that the victim was returning home in an app-based cab when the three accused – who have been identified as Nilanjan Das, Kutti Das and Shibu Das – stopped the cab near Patuli on Sunday night. Police came to know that all the three accused were acquainted with the victim.

Apprehending that the accused would attack her, the woman asked the driver to speed up and drive away from the three men. The driver acted accordingly but the three accused were able to chase down the cab on their motorcycles.

The accused stopped the car and broke the windowpanes. They went on to drag the woman from the car and attack her with a weapon. In spite of some injuries inflicted upon her, the woman somehow managed to free herself from their clutches and fled the spot.

After reaching home, the victim called up on the city police’s emergency number and narrated the incident. Police reached the spot after a while, but were unable to find any of the accused. On Monday, the victim lodged a complaint at the local police station on the basis of which police have started an investigation.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the incident took place due to a quarrel between the three accused and the girl’s family. Police came to know that one of those three had borrowed money from the victim’s mother and things turned ugly when they demanded the money back. Police are however looking into whether there was some other angle in the incident. They are conducting raids to nab the culprits who are currently absconding.
