Wizards sweep safe past Waveriders

Uttar Pradesh Wizards finally broke Delhi Waveriders’ unbeaten streak in their final league game when they blanked the hosts 4-1 at the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium on Thursday. For Delhi who topped the league standings with a whooping 49 points will face the same rivals in the semi-finals. The Wizards overtook Jaypee Punjab Warriors in the points tally to move third with 32 points. Jeroen Hertzberger was adjudged the man of the match for his superb display throughout the game.

The first quarter started with nothing much as both teams came out with a cautious approach.

Both teams pressed more on midfield and kept the ball trying to break on any mistakes from the opponent’s side. The second quarter saw Delhi up the tempo when Hayward broke in from the right as Akashdeep Singh latched on to the ball as UP goalkeeper Kumar Subramiam made a superb save diving onto his right to parry the ball to safety. UP responded when Gurbaj Singh came close to get a shot in when Nicholas Jacobi came in charging to deny any advancement. Seconds later Delhi’s Simon Child’s shot hit the bar as both teams tried to break the deadlock.

UP Wizards struck the first chord when Hertzberger made a superb run from the right to roll inside into space to shoot past Nicholas Jacobi for UP’s opener and his fifth goal of the tournament. Wizards went 2-0 up soon again when Sannuvanda Uthappa made a great finish as Jacobi mistimed a run to get beaten and the visitors a two-goal cushion. Delhi looked to attack but Wizard’s defence denied them much space inside the D-Box. Wizards pounced onto a sudden counter attack when Hertzberger and Nithin Thimmaiah exchanged the ball on the run as Nithin dribbled past two defenders to take a shot but Jacobi came for Delhi’s rescue once again to deny a third.
