‘Will turn Rohini into a model-city’

BJP ‘s candidate from Rohini, Vijender Gupta, who was also a former Delhi BJP president, shares his dream of turning Rohini into a model city. In a conversation with Abhishek Dey, he talks about development, women’s security and fighting corruption among other things.

Which is the issue in your constituency which demands urgent attention?
The issue is development. And for us, development is multi-faceted. For instance, there are three metro stations in my constituency – Rohini East, Rohini West and Rithala – that connect the sub-city with the rest of the national capital. But the challenge is travelling back home from the metro stations and vice versa. The poor condition of intermediate transport has to be changed. We shall bring metro feeder bus service in Rohini in a large scale.

What are the other facets of development? Please elaborate.
The sub-city also needs cultural centres. The infrastructure of the city also needs regular upkeep. Now maintenance further involves maintenance of public property – roads, lanes, parks and drains among others. The issue of waste disposal is also big here which is connected to Swachhata (cleanliness). For this, I would raise a public awareness and create an environment that would nurture a holistic approach towards development.

People in Sector 7 and 8 of Rohini have often complained about the walls along the road (some of them government school walls) being turned into public urinals. Does that not count in Swachhata?
The connecting road between Sector 7 and 8 is a major commercial stretch in Rohini. Lack of public toilets in the stretch has led to the menace of walls-turning into urinals. We shall construct public toilets there and some other areas too in a big way to get rid of the problem.

How would you ensure security for women in Rohini?
We shall install CCTV cameras in all the areas of Rohini and  ensure 100 per cent surveillance of the sub-city. We shall coordinate with the police and the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) for their monitoring and upkeep respectively. In the past few years, we have also witnessed rising incidents of snatching and other crimes in the city, which are very much intertwined with the idea of women security. We feel that CCTV cameras will take care of the whole law and order situation in Rohini.

There were two unauthorised colonies in Rohini, which were recently regularised. But they still lack many basic amenities like education and health facilities. What do you have for them?
The children of these localities have to travel long distance everyday for the nearest government school. I believe, this has to change and I shall work for the construction of government schools there. I would also work on health facilities, which shall include adding more dispensaries and maternity wards to take care of women and child deliveries.

How would you tackle corruption?
Fighting corruption is always topmost on BJP’s  agenda. Without taking the names of any civic agency in particular, I would say that we shall not tolerate corruption with regard to all the civic bodies which we have to deal with – DDA or MCD or whatever it is.

What is your opinion on the idea of separate statehood for Delhi?
It is not a new issue and there is also no harm in Delhi becoming a separate state. We shall work on it if it is in the common man’s interest.
