Will review naming of above 600 schemes named after Gandhis: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said that if voted to power they will review naming of more than 600 schemes in the name of three generations of Gandhi dynasty.

The party alleged that Congress party has given an impression that no other leaders in India other than Gandhis — Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi — played an important role in building nation and launched 650 schemes in their names ignoring others.

BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said, ‘It has been the Congress that has glorified contributions of one family by giving it credit for everything taking place in the country before and after the Independence. If we come to power then we will review naming of all these 650 schemes in the name Gandhis.’

While ruling out differences among the leaders in the party, he said, ‘These are false and baseless allegation. It was purely our party’s decision to project Gujarat chief minister as the Prime Ministerial candidates of India. It was a unanimous decision taken by all of us.’

Naidu said, ‘The charge of pursuing personality centric politics does not stick to us. It has been the trademark of the Congress and I must say the famous one liner of late Congress leader D K Baruah who in 70s once said that Indira is India and India is Indira.’

Attacking Indira Gandhi for imposing Emergency in India, he said, ‘It was the same person who subverted parliamentary democracy by imposing Emergency in 1975. It was unfortunate.’

Naidu said Congress should not give sermons to the BJP about pursuing ‘personality-centric politics’ and being disrespectful of senior leaders.
