Widening of Barasat-Madhyamgram stretch of Jessore Road likely to start soon

The project includes setting up a flyover at Barasat Dakbanglo crossing, an underpass at Madhyamgram Chowmatha and widening of a 7 km stretch between the airport and Dak Bungalow More which would ease the traffic. There is bottleneck situation at Madhyamgram Chowmatha, Dak Bungalow More and Colony More, Barasat at the busy hours as a result of which people were seriously inconvenienced.

A few months ago, senior PWD officials held a meeting with officials of the ministry of road, transport and highways in New Delhi where there was a detailed discussion on the project. The matter was also discussed with the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna.

Following the instruction from Banerjee, the PWD had started work on widening NH-35 which connects Dak Bungalow More and Petrapole. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) was planning to set up two flyovers at Barasat to ease out traffic in the area.

Dak Bungalow More is an utterly congested area where the two roads leading to Bongaon Petrapole and another to Siliguri get divulged. The main purpose of setting up two flyovers in the area was to stop traffic congestion in Barasat particularly in two stretches between Dak Bungalow More and Helabattala on National Highway-34 and Dak Bungalow More and Champadali More on National Highway-35.

A meeting was held between the state government and NHAI officials, in which, a project was discussed and a report was prepared.Traffic jam has always been a problem in Barasat as the two National Highways are not too wide here and it was neither possible for the state government or the NHAI to demolish the buildings that had come up on the roadside.

Due to lack of private roads, there was always a huge traffic pressure on the highways and as there is no alternative road to reach Barasat station, the police cannot stop the van rickshaws, e-rickshaws, autos and other slow-moving vehicles from running on the highways. As a result, traffic movement becomes slow on both the highways.

It may be mentioned that widening of Jessore road is underway from Madhymgram to Airport.
In many parts, widening works have already been completed.

Once the project will be completed the vehicle coming from various parts of the North will take lesser time to reach the airport and the city.
