Why this unholy haste in appointing Lokpal, asks Jaitley

BJP has demanded an immediate stop in attempts to appoint a Lokpal, saying it would be a ‘gross political impropriety’ and ‘violation’ of the model code of conduct if the Centre rushes through the appointment of the anti-graft watchdog. On Sunday, BJP leader Arun Jaitley said the procedure was legally ‘suspect’ and reeked of ‘unholy haste’ that would damage the credibility of the Lokpal even before it gets formed.

Sources say PM Manmohan Singh is planning to convene a meeting of the Lokpal Selection Committee on 27 or 28 April. Reacting to the reports, Jaitley, in a statement on his blog, asked the PM to introspect over this haste on the eve of  his ‘certain departure’, adding that Singh had  nothing to lose except ‘residual creditability.’

‘Half the elections have been completed. 26 days remain for the declaration of the results and the formation of a new government.  It would be a gross political impropriety and violation of the code of conduct, if the UPA would rush through its appointment at this stage. Such unholy haste will destroy the credibility of the Lokpal even before it is formed. This procedure should be stopped immediately,’ Jaitley wrote.
