‘Why such harsh words against me?’

Rejecting the corruption allegations levelled by Team Anna, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Tuesday that the charges against him were irresponsible and unfortunate. 'I will give up my public life if allegations are proved against me,' said the Prime Minister on his way back from Myanmar.

The Prime Minister said that the allegations regarding irregularities in allocation of coal blocks were made without confirming facts. 'My long public career as finance minister, as leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha and now as Prime Minister has been an open book,' said Singh.

Singh also said that the people of the country should now decide what has been the fault of the Prime Minster that has forced Team Anna to use such harsh words against him.

Singh's comment come in the wake of corruption allegations levelled against him by Team Anna members Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal. Team Anna members had accused the Prime Minister and 14 other ministers of graft. Team Anna had also demanded a Special Investigation Team probe against the ministers.

Prashant Bhushan, on his part, defended his remarks against the Prime Minister saying he never used the particular deregatory word against Singh. Bhusan claimed that he only said the Congress was using Singh as a shield the way Pandavas killed Bhishma in Mahabharata.

It's not only the Prime Minister who has expressed his displeasure against the allegations levelled by some members of Team Anna. It seems trouble is also brewing within the members of Team Anna. On Tuesday, Justice Santosh Hegde distanced himself from the comments made by Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal.

'I do not have the material that Team Anna has as I was not in the meeting. Without studying the material against the ministers, I do not want to comment on it or associate myself with it,' said Santosh Hegde.

Hazare himself appeared to distance himself from the move to target Singh and described the Prime Minister as an 'honest man' soon after his team put Singh's name on the list of 14 'corrupt' ministers last Saturday. He had said that he would seek clarification from the team.
