‘Why label music under various categories?’

Swatantra Rock music, that’s how the band Eka calls their music. With Benjamine Pinto on keyboards and vocals, Hitesh Madan on vocals and guitar and Lokesh Madan on vocals and Bass, the band is all set to thrill Delhiites at their upcoming gig. Here’s what they have to say:

What is ‘Swatantra rock’ all about?

We found it very difficult and limiting to classify our music under any one particular genre. We coined the term Swatantra Rock and defined it as ‘Music beyond time and boundaries’. To us it means music which is born free, has a purpose, a feel of timelessness and music that knows no boundaries. Why put any boundaries on a medium that connects millions?

What are the thoughts before a new composition?

While working on a new composition, we believe in going with the flow of music and developing it organically into a direction that the song demands.

What do you play?

We play a mix of our originals primarily in Hindi and English [and in a few regional languages] with some popular classic rock and Bollywood medleys, a little bit of Sufi. In Delhi, we would love to sing some popular Punjabi and Sufi tracks.

What are the lyrics all about?

Each of the songs is special. Our all time favourites are Jaane Kyun I Love you, an infectious love ballad; Chalte Jaana, for its sheer inspirational value; Nimboo Paani, a fun song with a khatta meetha twist, Christmas, for which we collaborated with 10 different artistes from Delhi and for which we were chosen as the Best Group at the Artist Aloud Music Awards 2011.
