Weekly market vendors to get IDs

In its move to regulate weekly markets in the area, EDMC has decided to issue identity cards to the shopkeepers at weekly markets. The identity card will bear the names of the weekly markets allotted to the shopkeepers along with the due rate to be paid by him.

‘We have made all the preparations and the identity cards will be issued to vendors from 21 January,’ said Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, deputy commissioner of Shahdara North zone of EDMC. Presently, the corporation is dependent on contractors to collect license fee from vendors in the weekly markets and the corporation is facing huge revenue loss as they do not reveal exact number of shops in the markets.

As per the data with the corporation, around 61 weekly markets are operating from EDMC. These markets at present fetched Rs 1 crore. This is expected to increase manifold due to introduction of the new system. A shopkeeper will be allotted a 6 X 4 feet space for Rs 10 per day per site. The weekly markets shall have a clearance of zonal vending committee. The zonal vending committee comprises the officers of traffic police, local police, members of RWAs and local Councillor. ‘The identity cards will also be helpful in containing encroachment and curbing crime in the area,’ added Bidhuri.
