‘We aren’t just actors anymore’

You remember her as Ashima from Vicky Donor. The strong-willed Bengali girl who pretty much set the trend for hoe Bengali women should be perceived in Bollywood, a good mile away from Devdas’s Paro and thank god for that.

But in real life, there are only a few things that separates Yami Gautam from Ashima. One, that she isn’t married and two, she isn’t Bengali. But the spark that made audience absolutely adore the character is right there in place.

Gautam was in the Capital to promote Pantene shampoo with a Hair Dare along with Mahie Gill when we got the chance to catch up with the lady.

The actor has had her time with Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada films and a few TV serials but Bollywood seems to have been her calling as she finally made her debut with Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor opposite Ayushmann Khurrana in 2012. And then clearly this actor has no plans to look back!

2014 saw her starring in Total Siyappa with Ali Zafar. Though the movie didn’t work as well as Vicky Donor, Gautam is making clear inroads into the big bad world of B’wood. She will be seen next in Prabhu Deva’s Action Jackson alongside Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha. Clearly the girl is doing something right.

‘I have just signed a new movie,’ says the actor but adds that she will wait for the makers to release the information before she starts talking about it. And if our ever efficient Wikipedia is to be believed, Gautam has Hamara Bajaj and Badlapur also on her movie to-do list in the coming year and next.
We quizzed her on why she chose to endorse a brand and why it was at all a necessity as an actor to promote such verticals. ‘We are not just actors anymore,’ says Gautam, ‘Presence on the social network, endorsing brands, becoming brand ambassadors and of course working on films and promoting those...all of these go into making a star today. It is no longer just about acting.’ So do these innumerable other ‘distractions’ take away from the actor, who ideally should just be recognized and remembered for the roles he/she does? ‘Of course not!’ says Gautam, ‘Things have changed and all adds up to make us recognizable faces and of course the audience can relate to you!’ says the actor who is also associated with Jabong and Ola Cabs.

So what next for Gautam? ‘I want to do different kinds of roles, I surely don’t want to play another Ashima!’ says the actor laughing and explains that different roles will only allow her to grow as an actor. She has been approached to play a Bengali girl after Vicky Donor because people were convinced that she was Bengali says Gautam adding that she clearly refused to reprise a similar role.
She is all busy with Action Jackson which is a whole world different from Vicky Donor and Total Siyappa and the other movies in the pipeline promise to be treats as well. We can’t wait!
